Legal question: if you had whole-disk encryption, and the duress password just zeroized the decryption key, would that be "destroying evidence?" Especially if there was a recovery possible but not instantly available, such as a Yubikey in a safe deposit box in a bank. That would take a subpoena to get, and there is an opportunity to challenge the subpoena in court first. Not instantly at the border.
Something like that should be a standard feature of a secure phone.
I think that is because it is a social value. It isn't meant to be a rigid rule; it's meant to be a guideline that can adapt to the needs of the situation. There has to be nuance in social values.

I am mid 40s. Started working at a hyper scaler a couple years ago. I think you are overthinking it. All there is, is to be present and focus on what is important. And no one else can tell you what is important, you already know. Spend your time wisely with your family or on things that matter to you and not on trivial pursuit. There are no secrets in this. It is largely what you define.
When you ask this question of others, you are asking what am I forgetting? What will I regret? They can’t tell you. They can tell you what they regretted it and maybe you will regret those same things they did. But you have to decide. In 10 years. In 20 years. All you have to do is ask your future self what you’re gonna regret that you didn’t do. I had found that we already know the answers to those things.
E: think of it this way. And you don’t have to have a dog for these questions to work they’re metaphorical really, but also physical if you do have a dog. Did you walk your dog? Did you play ball with it? If they die tomorrow, will you look back and say that today was good? Did you do everything you could do with your dog? If not go do those things right now don’t leave them undone. That’s all there is. And the same thing works with everything in life. You know what you should’ve done in the day. If you do those things in 10 or 20 years, you won’t look back and say I wish I would’ve done those things cause you’ve done them.
I see it more a reflection of the degree to which America was foundational to programming and internet culture. So in a sense America did beat them to it, even if they might eventually surpass America they are still operating in a technical culture that the US created.

This isn't true though, if they had infinite money they wouldn't be spending every single second of their waking existence trying to get more of it and move higher on the leaderboard. If your opinion is that Meta/Zuck wouldn't care about being fined a year's worth of global revenue, or in his personal case, 90% of his net worth, then I'd really like to hear why. Because it contradicts all of their actual actions showing that all they care about is hoarding as much money as possible, meaning they'd very much care about it being taken away. Sites can be fast with PHP and JavaScript. The slowness you see is mostly coming from all the frameworks too many developers "include" willy nilly with code that can only be described as bloat because 99% of it is completely unused, yet being loaded and computed by the browser on every load. That's what you're experiencing on too many websites.
Mine is for Java and is intended to be production grade. The first goal is to guarantee linear-time behavior to prevent ReDoS attacks. My collaborator and I have recently been optimizing it to try to surpass native RE2 in performance.
It turns out optimizations are incredibly well suited for an agentic loop. You've got concrete acceptance criteria (must show a meaninging improvement on a benchmark case, must pass tests). The agent is really, really good at using tools like a profiler and disassembler, better than I am (and I've been doing this for 20 years). It also papers over things that would take me a while to learn, like how the in-incubation Vector (SIMD) API works in Java. I understand the concept but it would take me a while to understand Java's implementation. The agent can just read the docs and go.
The key is creating a good benchmark suite and ensuring the agent doesn't ship optimizations that are too narrow or too focused on the benchmark cases. You also need a really strong test suite to make sure you're not regressing correctness. SafeRE has billions of tests; a subset of several million run on CI, and the others run on-demand.
Next time you ask your AI of choice to build an app, please tell them to use plain language without frameworks at all and keep modules to a minimum (ie. node express, ejs and pg, nothing else) and you will see a huuuuge difference
I find the juxtaposition of "can't stop bragging" and "is not a good marketing term" to be fascinating. Have you considered that they know these recent reports aren't a good look for them but that they feel compelled (either because they know it would be far worse when it inevitably got out on it's own or maybe even from some moral sense) to report somewhat truthfully?
What I have learned about neuroscience and philosophy is this: most people are not willing to invest as much time in small pursuits versus understanding the machinery of their mind and what will actually let them understand themselves with more clarity.
Understanding the self loop. The strange self loop. Seeing that the thing that is doing the observing inside of us is the whole and that from within our own system, we cannot completely reason about ourselves. The incompleteness theorem.
We have named it we call it the default mode network. It is essentially a recursive predictive machine. It only stops when we die. It is essentially making predictions about reality constantly. It is retrieving previous state and associating at the current state to make decisions. What it associates with previous memory and current state are encoding of our hormonal state and mental state at that point in time.
You can call it emotions. You can try and reason about it. It just exists. At some level, you just have to learn to let it be. All of the sophisticated words of psychology and trying to describe the machinery from within the machinery. It’s useful, you need a guide to live life. To keep the machinery and coding clean and not over, indexing on states that aren’t useful. But it all boils down to some pretty simple things. And when you see that the observer is the observed, and that it is all a part of the whole of the self, things become more manageable, for me, at least.
Take grief for example. What is grief? It is a prediction error. An expectation of some past state that the prediction machinery keeps expecting to come up one way, but it comes up another. And when it does come up as an error it hurts. It’s OK to experience it and to embrace it even. But it’s also OK to see it for what it is. We can’t escape the machine. But we can step outside of it briefly and watch it at work and acknowledge what it actually is.

Did you mean to imply the ratio between intelligence of someone with IQ 100 and IQ 180 is smaller than a factor of 1.8, or did you mean something else?
The evidence that intelligence can be trained is that every metric of intelligence ever invented is consistently going up when the subjects spend time to prepare themselves before being measured. IQ tests, school grades, chess performance, math olympiads, you name it. Sure, you can always claim that all of those are skills separate from intelligence and that's why becoming better is possible - but then how do you explain that being better at one of these automatically makes you better at all the others, if the overall intelligence stays the same?

These are expensive and there's the ram shortage to contend with. People have trouble getting Pixels because they aren't sold most places but I would guess that importing a $400 10a would be not so bad if these are the alternatives. The real salvation comes when lower tier Motorola devices get the hardware security features.

Unless your job really prioritizes performance and builds in benchmarking people often focus on finishing a feature as fast as possible and ignore performance (and accessibility, bugs, UI polish, etc.)
I think the central question for a such memory system is whether we or the agents can find the relevant information and how to organize these data as changes continues to come in. Would we miss something in the retrieval process? How do we organize the information so they stay actual and correct without piling up the garbage? Of course we can continue to concatenate the data and tag them with version and date, but then we have to face the problem of extracting the relevant information in a short time. If we delegate that problem to a LLM, long context retrieval performance will degrade and the cost will explode.
That is the reason why we condense the information in the first place. Forgetting *is* the necessary part of learning and basically with memory + smart retrieval we want to build a learning system.
Oh, in that case I agree strongly with William. I think the definition of intelligence a complete waste of time and the only real question is, can these tool solve problems for us? The answer is clearly yes, there are some problems they can.
The really interesting question is still a few years away when we ask if we humans have the right to turn these things on and off? ;)
