I was immediately hoping for some local-AI setups that do real work, on limited resources. Unfortunately it looks like this is still waiting on more people to share.
Not a SWE, but I do Freetoken (backend) + unsloth (front) to run qwen 3.6 35B A3B NVFP4 (~20GB) in 8GB VRAM + ~20GB RAM. Getting around 50 t/s on a 3070. I don't think I can even share through this site.
If not coding what do you use it for? Also what kind of performance do you tend to get out of it? I've been thinking about a similar setup but am skeptical it's worth the effort.
It's still typically for code, like python data stuff, bash scripts, general web search, small javascript stuff for my website. By saying not SWE, I mean I don't really see much benefit from "agentic" stuff, although I've tried. 50 t/s means 40~60 seconds for a typical thinking response. I used to run gemma 4 e4b-it-qat fully in GPU (~150 t/s), but the quality improvement moving to a much larger MoE model was 100% worth the switch. Especially because I had a lot of idle ram (from the before times :( ). There is some tradeoff in terms of context length, but I just use it as a chat. Also it's fairly trivial to setup as long as the GPU is supported.
I've looked into M-Disc several times, as a way to backup and archive my personal and family data over the course of my lifetime (and possibly the next generation).
The relative obscurity of the format, the drama around Verbatim's acquisition and the dwindling options for a Blu-Ray player ultimately keep me from investing in it.
Honestly, I'd love a shelf-stable storage mechanism that isn't tape.
IIRC the expected lifespan of a brand new drive in cold storage that has been written to once is 10-15 years. The platters were technically fine after that, it was the lubricants and the screws rusting that caused them to fail. The latter of course is heavily dependant on where they are stored.
Also this single bit of "anecdata": I was once told that in long storage attraction between the electron orbitals of head and platter could gradually drive out the air gap, leaving them bonded too tightly for the drive motor to overcome.
The fact that he's so anti-immigration as an immigrant himself is so odd. My rather negative interpretation is he doesn't consider himself to be an immigrant which screams white supremacy.
If we are censoring our daily activities and major life decisions like healthcare due to the data economy, then it is making us less free. But who knows how many generations will pass before a solution shows up. We would need representatives who act collectively towards motives beyond profits.
Also note that even though you get a warning about an unknown config key, the value is actually set so you're future-proof. Check `grep telemetry ~/.config/gh/config.yml`
I'm not saying more commits = bad developer. In my example that happened to be the case but not because they had a lot of commits but because they were bad at their job. I was just trying to warn that taking these git snippets at face-value does not paint the full picture.
If someone came to me and said "I ran these and I see XXX was the most prolific committer and they left X months ago, what will be do???" I'd have to work hard not to laugh.
Since these snippets are self-described as ways to get familiar with the code/projects I wanted to provide the counter point. Most of those snippets do not at all paint the real picture and for all the repos I tested it on they paint the opposite of reality.
I know these codebases like the back of my hand, the purported purpose of these snippets is to better understand the codebase, I can tell you they don't work for anything I tested them on. Maybe they work for other codebases but the sample size I have access to says they don't work for me.
I haven't finished the article yet but I think your point is an important one, and that's to run the commands with a context in mind. The article seems to be coming from the perspective of somebody who is brand new to the project, and as your experience indicates, interviewing teams and leads before running those commands might add more understanding to what they're telling you.
Serious (but not easy) answer:
You can move to a different country that more aligns with your moral standings or interests. You're (presumably) a valuable asset that will provide a net-positive contribution wherever you move, and a loss will be incurred when you emigrate.
It's a huge undertaking, but you _can_ vote where your tax money gets sent. You can ensure it bootstraps a more equal system instead of propping-up an unequal one.
I did this myself, and I feel good about having done it.
You don't need to be rich to get a working visa (assuming you are a competent software engineer -- plenty of places in Europe will hire you, and there is a path to citizenship).
You'll have to reassess what a "software engineer" salary looks like, but this is unironically part of the pathway towards living in a more-equal society where perhaps we shouldn't be earning 3x as much as everyone else just because we can invert a binary tree.
i'm kinda jaded because it seems the type of people that get into politics do it to gain money and power.. so voting always feels like picking the lesser of two evils
Start by just attending a some meetings of your local school board, city council, etc. Sit, watch, and maybe take notes. Compare the reality with local press coverage (if any) of it. Try analyzing the social dynamics. Talk to other ordinary citizens about it.
If the only people paying real attention to gov't leaders are the greedy and power-hungry, then few decent people will run for office. And very few of those win.
A classic example of how the vaunted "First Amendment" doesn't actually help. Sure after a couple of decades it might be repealed, and your conviction would be quashed. Doesn't mean it doesn't stop the damage in the first place.
And then what? Another bald head will replace them, but this time with an army of peons on their side to protect them president style, because for them it is much easier to buy loyalty of even 1000 men than it is for you to rally people to your cause.

Why should someone need to start a business just to have as good a life as their parents did? Why is today's wealth inequality optimal for society? Rich people in the past got by just fine. They started businesses, succeeded, lived incredibly comfortable lives, all while earning a smaller multiple more than the people working for them. The centralization of wealth is a sign of a sick society, especially when people who provide labor suffer and get less of the pie.
Let's assume he does and is very successful, he makes $1T. Then what? Giving it all away won't resolve growing inequalities. Using it to influence medias and politics?
Because obviously anyone who disagrees with the system is a toddler. What shaped your mindset? Are you a temporarily embarrassed millionaire thinking that defending Bezos and the likes will put you at the table with them? You know you can respect them without simping for them, right? Dictatorship is an almost inevitable outcome of huge wealth inequality.
At the very least political checks and balances erode rapidly, because most politicians, judges, and media people love easy money. If a billionaire throws money at them they'll do whatever they're told to do.
There aren't many systems that protect non-compliers from negative consequences when they're surrounded by corruption.
Also, who said anything about Amazon? Why are you myopic? The whole system is rotten to the core when a single person can make it in a minute more than 99% of world’s population and not use the money to advance the world. And before you mark (ha, get it?) me as a communist – I’m not against wealth and personal ownership. It’s one thing to own a Ferrari and an expensive home, and is another to live in a cookie clicker world watching number go up and doing nothing with it but multiply the money.
so it is either or, eh? this is the fault of our society (the most in america due to two-party system) where we have been programmed (especially in recent years with party-controlled “social” media) to think this way. there is of course much more sane middle ground but we are past the point, evidenced by comments like yours, where this is even debatable. any approach to a more sane scenarios will be labeled as “socialism” etc…
Are there not wealthy business owners who donate their money to poltical causes they believe in in other countries with differently designed electoral systems?
